Whole leaf grading starts with the name of the leaf "Pekoe"  It is a Chinese word which means the white hairs on the underside of the leaf.

The grade of the leaf is given at the final stage of production.

Pekoe Souchong (PS) - shorter, coarser leaf than Pekoe

Pekoe (P) - shorter, coarser leaf than Orange Pekoe

Flowery Pekoe (FP) - leaf that has been rolled lengthwise; shorter, coarser pieces than Orange Pekoe

Orange Pekoe (OP) - large leaf

Flowery Orange Pekoe (FOP) - large, flowery leaf

Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (GFOP) - Flowery Orange Pekoe with tips

Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (TGFOP) - Flowery Orange Pekoe with a good proportion of tips

Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (FTGFOP) - exceptionally high quality leaf

Special Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe (SFTGFOP) - the very best whole leaf quality
